Malica Annual Scientific Seminar | Hanoi | 15 November 2022

15 November 2022, Markets and Agriculture Linkages for Cities in Asia – MALICA Platform organized its Annual Scientific Seminar 2022 in Hanoi, featuring presentations and discussions on the transformations of food systems from the local to the national scale in Southeast Asia.

The seminar gathered nearly 50 participants including Vietnamese and international experts and researchers working in food systems and sustainable agriculture. The event honor to have presences of Assoc. Prof. Dao The Anh – Deputy Director of the Vietnam Academy of Agricultural Sciences (VAAS), and Chairman of the MALICA Platform; Mr. Sylvain Perret – Head of Research Department "Environments & Societies" of CIRAD, Mr. Saykham Vorachit - Deputy Director of Planning Department of Laos National Agriculture and Forestry Research Institute (NAFRI).

In the first session, the seminar introduced national action plan in Vietnam and some updates in Lao PRD in terms of food system transformation. In Vietnam, agroecology transition is identified as the main orientation of the agriculture and will be important contributor to the national action plan for food system by 2030. In Lao PDR, researchers briefly answered for 4 main sustainable questions of the food system in this country and proposed systemic levers for each issue.

Next session was about territorial food systems in the region, from analysis to practice. Malica researchers from CIRAD and National University of Laos introduced mapping territorial agroecological systems in Xiengkhouang province of Lao PDR and Dien Bien Provice of Vietnam. Some follow-up presentations provided in details some potential actions and intervention for sustainable food systems in those two countries.

Last but not least is the discussion session on policy dialogue for sustainable food systems in Vietnam and Lao PDR, contributed by panelists from Vietnam and Laos institutes (VAAS, IPSARD and NAFRI) and international organizations (ILRI and CIRAD).
